How It Works

Typing speed is measured in Words Per Minute (WPM), where a "word" is standardized as 5 characters (including spaces). The formula is: WPM = (total characters typed / 5) / time in minutes. Gross WPM counts all keystrokes, while Net WPM subtracts errors: Net WPM = Gross WPM − (uncorrected errors / time in minutes).

Accuracy is calculated as: Accuracy % = (correct characters / total characters typed) × 100. The test tracks each keystroke in real-time, comparing it against the reference text character by character. Errors are highlighted immediately, allowing self-correction (backspace) which counts as a corrected error.

For Korean text, typing speed is measured in Characters Per Minute (CPM) or Strokes Per Minute, as Korean syllable blocks (e.g., 한) are composed of 2–3 individual keystrokes (ㅎ+ㅏ+ㄴ). The test detects whether the input method is English or Korean and adjusts the metric accordingly. A character-level diff algorithm identifies which specific keys cause the most errors, displayed in a post-test analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average typing speed?

The average typing speed is about 40 WPM for most people. Office workers typically type 50-70 WPM, while professional typists can exceed 80 WPM.

What is the difference between WPM and CPM?

WPM (Words Per Minute) measures typing speed in words, commonly used for English. CPM (Characters Per Minute) counts individual keystrokes, commonly used for Korean. English WPM is typically calculated as CPM divided by 5.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practice touch typing (typing without looking at the keyboard), maintain proper hand posture, and practice consistently for 10-15 minutes daily. You should see noticeable improvement within a month.

What do the grades mean?

S: 80+ WPM (Outstanding), A: 60-79 WPM (Excellent), B: 40-59 WPM (Good), C: 25-39 WPM (Average), D: Below 25 WPM (Keep Practicing).

Is this test accurate?

Yes, our test measures your real-time input and calculates WPM/CPM based on correctly typed characters. The accuracy metric shows the percentage of characters typed correctly.
