Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 4.5, 4.3, and 4.0 scales?

The 4.5 scale is used in most Korean universities where A+ = 4.5. The 4.3 scale is used internationally where A+ = 4.3. The 4.0 scale is used in some US universities where A+ and A both equal 4.0.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours. For example, if you got A+(4.5) in a 3-credit course and B+(3.5) in a 2-credit course, your GPA = (4.5×3 + 3.5×2) / (3+2) = 20.5/5 = 4.1.

Does F count toward GPA?

Yes, F (0 points) is included in GPA calculation and significantly lowers your average. However, some universities allow grade retakes where the new grade replaces the F. Check your university's policy.

What GPA do I need for employment?

Many Korean companies require a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.5 for applications. Top companies and graduate schools often prefer 3.5+ on a 4.5 scale. However, requirements vary by company and industry.

How It Works

GPA is calculated as a weighted average: GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours). Each letter grade maps to a numeric value that depends on the grading scale.

On a 4.5 scale (common in Korean universities): A+ = 4.5, A0 = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B0 = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C0 = 2.0, D+ = 1.5, D0 = 1.0, F = 0.0. On a 4.3 scale: A+ = 4.3, A0 = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B0 = 3.0, B− = 2.7, and so on. On a 4.0 scale (US standard): A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B0 = 3.0, etc.

Pass/Fail (P/F) courses are excluded from GPA calculation — they contribute to earned credits but do not affect the grade point average. The calculator supports both semester GPA (single term) and cumulative GPA (all terms combined) modes.
