Frequently Asked Questions
How does annual leave accrue?
For the first year, you earn 1 day per month of perfect attendance (max 11 days). After 1 year with 80%+ attendance, you get 15 days. Every 2 additional years adds 1 more day, up to a maximum of 25 days.
Does using monthly leave reduce second year's annual leave?
No. Since the 2018 amendment, first-year monthly leave (up to 11 days) and second-year annual leave (15 days) are counted separately.
What happens to unused annual leave?
Unused leave must be compensated financially (daily wage × unused days). However, if the employer properly implements a leave promotion system, compensation may be waived.
Do part-time workers get annual leave?
Yes. Part-time workers receive proportional annual leave based on their work hours compared to full-time equivalents.

How It's Calculated
Annual leave accrual under Korean Labor Standards Act:
• First year: 1 day per month of perfect attendance (up to 11 days) • After 1 year: 15 days • After 3+ years: 1 additional day for every 2 years worked (max 25 days total) - Formula: 15 + ((Years of Service − 1) ÷ 2) rounded down, capped at 25
Annual Leave Pay for unused days: Pay per day = Average Daily Wage (or Ordinary Daily Wage, whichever is higher) Total Annual Leave Pay = Pay per day × Number of unused leave days
Average Daily Wage = Last 3 months' total wages ÷ Total calendar days in that period.
⚠️ Disclaimer
Annual leave calculations can differ based on your company's fiscal year system vs. hire date system. Some employers may have separate leave policies. Unpaid leave or long absences may affect accrual. Consult your HR department or a labor consultant for your specific situation.
